acabamento...!
18x20 Bass shell ready for staining
. . Staining a 11"x14" tom . . Staining complete of first coat . Staining 8x8 tom . Airbrushing the fade, also called a burst, on the 11x14 tom. . 8x8 tom with fade complete. . First round of fade done on the 11x14 tom and the 9x12 tom with 5 coats of lacquer clear coat. . Beginning fade on the 18x20 bass . . . Spraying the clear coat on the 11x14 tom. Always use the appropriate PPE, Personal Protective Equipment, while working. . Reflection of lacquer finish buffed out. . 9x12 tom with 5 coats of lacquer. No I didn't pour anything on the shell, That's just a weird reflection. . 8x8 tom with 8 coats of lacquer. . 9x12 tom with 10 coats and 11x14 tom with 4 coats of clear lacquer. . 9x12 shell close up . 11x14 shell close up . Level Sanding Clear Coat . These dark shiny spots are what you want to get rid of with out sanding down into the color coat. . Buffing the bearing edge using a hard block of carnauba wax. . Loading the buffing wheel with wax. . Completed bearing edge close up. . Wet sanding after leveling and beginning the final rub out process. . Rubbing out the the clear coat throught the various grits 600, 800, 1000, 1500, 2000 with wet sandpaper is the key to the mirror high gloss shine. . I buff out the clear coat using 3M Finesse It II Finishing Material with a random orbital air tool and a wool pad. It is a fine liquid rubbing compound. I sometimes use a swirl remover if required. A few passes with a clean pad to really bring out the shine and your high gloss finish is complete. . Installing lugs on the bass drum. . 8x8 and 8x10 toms compeleted 9x12, 11x14, and 18x20 bass unfinished . 8x8 tom . 8x8 tom close up . 8x8 and 8x10 toms . 8x10 tom . . By now you may notice that the 8x8 tom has a RIMS mount and the other toms are using OptiMounts. That's because I built the 8" with four lugs. OptiMount works with only five lugs on an 8" tom...Live & Learn. . . . . . These audio samples where made with a single microphone mounted in different ways to illustrate how mic position affects the drum sound recorded. The microphone model used is a CAD E-100 condenser mic. There is no added EQ or processing except for a small amount of compression to even out the overall level. The samples are in mp3 format. Please make sure your player is set accordingly. SAMPLE 1 This sample had the mic mounted behind the throne about 7 foot high and angled down toward the center of the kit. SAMPLE 2 This sample had the mic mounted 3" above the front of the resonant head of the bass drum angled up slightly toward the toms. SAMPLE 3 This sample had the mic mounted to the right of the throne about 7 foot high and angled down toward the center of the kit. |
